Grim Workshop Lock Pick and Escape System

We have another Kickstarter project on our hands. This time we are featuring the Lock pick and Escape System designed by Grim Workshop. This is their second project to launch on Kickstarter as well as the second interaction I have had with them. Grim Workshop is a small family owned company based out of Texas that focuses on creating high quality survival tools and kits. These unique little tools are made of surgical grade stainless steel in the U.S.A. and are specifically designed to easily fit into any type of survival situation. It is incredibly easy to store an array of Grim Workshop's tools utilizing your everyday carry, survival kits, or just stashing them around your vehicle. Not only does Grim Workshop offer a wide selection of tools but also a few different style of carry. These range from small zipper pulls (which I will cover later), to dog tags, to credit card sized and shaped tool sets. This versatility gives you several options for making sure you are prepared in any situation.

My first interaction with Grim Workshop was through their first project the Zipper Micro Tool System. I have to that system is very neat and features a lot of great options. I ended up going with the full set so that I would have plenty of flexibility. I can definitely attest to the quality of the tools and was actually surprised at the retention system that some of the tools utilize to allow for re-usability. This system allows for some of the tools like the lock picks to be removed from their card, used, and placed back where they are held in place by the backing. The best part is that this system is utilized in their other products such as the new Lock Pick and Escape System on Kickstarter. After I changed day bags recently I stopped carrying the bulk of my zipper pulls but am looking forward to reintegrating them into my new set up. I will say that I only have one real downside with these products; because of how small these tools are they are slightly uncomfortable to use. Naturally, I knew that they were the size of a zipper pull so I am not complaining, that is just something to consider. In addition for the most part these are meant for survival and emergency usage so I am perfectly willing to sacrifice just a little bit of comfort in order to get out of a bad situation.

Now that I have talked enough about other things lets look at the actual product on Kickstarter. Once again this is Grim Workshop's new Lock Pick and Escape system. This new system features a redesigned card, dog tag, and micro tool zipper. Lets take a look at the flagship of this new system, the Grim Key Card. First the number of lock picks have been reduced from six to five different styles, however in their place Grim has stuffed several other handy tools for your usage. First they added another tension wrench, now both tension wrenches are integrated into lock picks so that there is no wasted space. In addition the added a multi use tool that features a handcuff key, file, saw, and lock shim. This last tool is what really elevates this card from just a pure lock pick kit into one designed for escaping a hostile situation. I also want to add that one of the best features in my opinion is that the handcuff key is long so you don't have to contort your wrist and hand into some unrecognizable shape in order to reach your own lock. Next up lets take a step down in size and look at the new Grim Key Tag. The new design features the same amount of separate tools but also utilizes their new focus on multi use parts. Instead of a separate rake, probe, and tension wrench the new three tension wrenches with two doubling as rakes and the third as a probe. Last but certainly not least we have the redesigned Grim Key Micro Tool. The original Micro Tools featured separate pulls for a rake version and probe version each with an additional tension wrench. This new design features two tension wrenches each with a lock pick on the other end. As you can see Grim Workshop worked to truly redesign their tools here in order to give you the most utility possible. These new designs give you a variety of tools to use when needing to open a lock. I do want to point out that the only one to feature a new handcuff key and shim is the Grim Key Card. If you want these tools in a smaller version they are offered in their original designs further down the pledge list.

Please keep in mind that you won't be able to just pop open a lock the first time. Like all skills this definitely requires practice. like I have said before it isn't enough to just have tools, you need to be know how to actually use them.

At the time of this writing there are 21 days to go (Dec 5th) and the project has raised over $40,000 of the $2,500 goal set forth with over 1,000 backers. This is a great addition to anyone's EDC not just those that consider themselves preppers or survivalists because anyone can find themselves in an undesirable situation and you don't want to be caught unprepared. I look forward to reviewing the product and practicing some lock picking at the end of the year when my new card comes in.
